The Cabin
One of the places that most of us remember when we were growing up is the cabin in Forkston. Lee & Karen fondly remember the picnics we would often have Sundays after church during the summers of the 60's & 70's when we were growing up. Some summers we would stay for a week with our Great Aunts & Uncles, Grace McCay & Savanna Palmer. In more recent decades we would have our annual family reunion at the cabin but during the past few years, the cabin had fallen into disrepair and the reunion has been held at the Creek Junction pavilion in Forkston. The flooding in late August and September 2011 changed all that.
We visited the cabin briefly in May 2012 and were amazed at the change in landscape. The creek in front of the cabin appears to have taken out the bank, trees and entire road on the side opposite the cabin. The creek bed is unrecognizable. Gone are the familiar boulders - there are just a few now. The cabin itself has suffered a lot of structural damage. Many trees have come down on it puncturing the roof. The water during the flood appears to have covered the first floor with almost 2 feet of water - and left behind almost a foot of sand in some parts of the kitchen. To our knowledge, the flood of 1972 never came in on the first floor. Alissa took most of the exterior and inside pictures as Karen & Lee didn't want to wade through the creek. Most of the rest of the landscape is filled with washed and fallen trees and other debris. We are planning to return sometime when we have more time to spend exploring. |
